Pyramids of Biomass Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what’s on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something’s unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It’s useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a trophic level?

The trophic level is the position of an organism in a food chain or web.

How much energy is typically passed from one trophic level to the next?

Only around 10% of the energy is transferred to the next trophic level; the rest is lost.

What does a pyramid of biomass represent?

A pyramid of biomass shows the total mass of organisms at each trophic level in a food chain.

Why does biomass decrease at higher trophic levels?

Biomass decreases because not all consumed energy is transferred; much is lost through respiration, excretion and undigested parts.

How much of the light energy do producers use for photosynthesis?

Producers use around 1% of the light energy that reaches them for photosynthesis.

What are the three reasons most biomass is not transferred to the next trophic level?

Not all parts of prey are consumed, some parts cannot be digested and are excreted, and a lot of biomass is used for respiration and released as waste products.
