What is DNA and what is its structure?

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic material in cells. It is a polymer made up of nucleotides, forming a double helix structure with two strands held together by weak hydrogen bonds.

What is the genome?

The genome is the entire genetic material of an organism, containing all the information needed to make the organism. In humans, it includes the genetic information on all 46 chromosomes in diploid cells.

What is a gene and what does it do?

A gene is a small section of DNA found on a chromosome that codes for a particular sequence of amino acids, forming proteins.

The DNA determines which proteins a cell produces.

What is the Human Genome Project?

The Human Genome Project was an initiative that mapped the entire human genome. It helps in understanding diseases, inherited disorders, and tracing human migration patterns.

How does DNA determine the characteristics of living organisms?

DNA’s genetic code, formed by the arrangement of nucleotides, determines which proteins the cell produces, thereby influencing the characteristics of the organism.

Why is understanding the human genome important?

Understanding the human genome helps identify genes linked to diseases, understand inherited disorders, and trace historical human migration patterns.
