Diffusion Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is diffusion?

The net movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration.

Which way do particles move in diffusion?

From high concentration to low concentration, down the concentration gradient.

In which states does diffusion happen?

In gases and in liquids (solutions), not in solids.

What is a concentration gradient?

The difference in concentration between two places.

Does diffusion need energy from respiration?

No. Diffusion is passive and uses no extra energy.

How does a bigger concentration gradient affect diffusion rate?

It makes diffusion faster.

How does temperature affect the rate of diffusion?

Higher temperature makes diffusion faster because particles move more quickly.

How does surface area affect diffusion across a membrane?

A larger surface area speeds diffusion because more particles can cross at once.

How does membrane thickness affect diffusion rate?

A thinner membrane speeds diffusion because the distance to travel is shorter.

What happens to diffusion when concentrations become equal?

There is no net movement, but particles still move both ways.

Name two small molecules that can diffuse through cell membranes.

Oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Which waste product diffuses from cells into the blood to be removed by the kidneys?

Urea.
