Light vs Electron Microscopes Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What do light microscopes use to form an image, and what do electron microscopes use?

Light microscopes use light and glass lenses. Electron microscopes use a beam of electrons and electromagnetic lenses.

Which type has the higher magnification and resolving power?

Electron microscopes have higher magnification and higher resolution.

Why do electron microscopes show more detail than light microscopes?

They have much higher resolving power, so they can separate points that are very close together.

Name one structure you can see with an electron microscope but not with a light microscope.

Ribosomes.

Can light microscopes be used to view living cells?

Yes, light microscopes can view living cells.

Why can’t electron microscopes be used to view living cells?

They need a vacuum and complex preparation, which kills the cells.

What colour are images from light microscopes and from electron microscopes?

Light microscope images can be in colour (with stains). Electron microscope images are black and white, though they can be colourised later.

How does sample preparation differ for light and electron microscopes?

Light microscopes need simple stains and thin slices. Electron microscopes need very thin, dry samples and more complex prep, often with metal stains.

What does TEM stand for and what kind of image does it give?

Transmission Electron Microscope. It gives a 2D image of thin sections showing internal detail.

What does SEM stand for and what kind of image does it give?

Scanning Electron Microscope. It gives a 3D image of the surface.

Which type is cheaper and more portable for school labs?

Light microscopes.

Which type is larger and needs special rooms and trained staff to use?

Electron microscopes.
