Gas Tests for Common Gases Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

How do you test for hydrogen gas?

Hold a lit splint at the mouth of the test tube. A squeaky pop means hydrogen is present.

What causes the squeaky pop in the hydrogen test?

Hydrogen burns quickly with oxygen in air to make water.

How do you test for oxygen gas?

Insert a glowing splint into the gas. If it relights, oxygen is present.

What is a glowing splint?

A wooden splint that is hot and glowing red, but not on fire.

How do you test for carbon dioxide gas?

Bubble the gas through limewater. It turns milky or cloudy if carbon dioxide is present.

What is limewater?

A dilute solution of calcium hydroxide used to detect carbon dioxide.

What white solid forms when carbon dioxide turns limewater cloudy?

Calcium carbonate, a white solid.

How do you test for chlorine gas?

Hold damp blue litmus paper in the gas. It is bleached white if chlorine is present.

Why must the litmus paper be damp for the chlorine test?

The moisture lets chlorine dissolve, so it can bleach the dye.

What should you do to a lit splint before testing for oxygen?

Blow it out so it is just glowing. Then place it in the gas.
