Strong vs Weak Acids Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a strong acid?

It fully ionises in water. Almost all its molecules release H+ ions.

What is a weak acid?

It only partly ionises in water. Most molecules do not release H+ ions.

For the same concentration, which has the lower pH: a strong or a weak acid?

The strong acid. It has more H+ ions in the solution.

Which conducts electricity better at the same concentration: a strong or a weak acid?

The strong acid. It has more ions to carry charge.

At the same concentration, which reacts faster with magnesium or carbonates?

The strong acid. More H+ ions mean a faster reaction.

What is the difference between acid strength and concentration?

Strength is how much the acid ionises. Concentration is how much acid is dissolved in a set volume.

Does diluting a strong acid make it a weak acid?

No. Dilution lowers concentration and raises pH, but strength stays the same.

Name two strong acids you should know.

Hydrochloric acid and nitric acid.

Name two weak acids you should know.

Ethanoic acid and citric acid.

What does a drop of 1 on the pH scale mean for hydrogen ion concentration?

It is 10 times higher.

What does it mean that weak acids set up a reversible reaction in water?

The acid splits into ions, and the ions can join back up. Only some molecules are split at any time.

What ion do all acids release in water?

Hydrogen ions, H+.
