Energy Stores and Transfers Between Them Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is an energy store?

A way energy is kept in a system, such as kinetic, thermal, or chemical.

What are the eight main energy stores?

Kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, chemical, thermal, magnetic, electrostatic, and nuclear.

What are the four ways energy can be transferred between stores?

By heating, by waves such as light or sound, by mechanical work when a force moves something, or by electrical work when charge moves.

What does mechanical transfer (mechanical work) mean?

Energy is transferred when a force moves an object.

What does electrical transfer (electrical work) mean?

Energy is transferred by moving charge in a circuit.

What are the three ways energy can be transferred by heating?

Conduction, convection, and radiation.

What does the law of conservation of energy say?

Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be stored, transferred, or dissipated.

In physics, what is a system?

The object or group of objects you choose to study.

What is a closed system?

A system where no energy enters or leaves, so the total energy stays the same.

What does 'dissipated energy' mean?

Energy that has spread to the thermal store of the surroundings, so it is less useful.

As a ball falls, which energy stores change most?

Gravitational potential store decreases and kinetic store increases. Some energy also warms the air and the ball.

When you stretch a spring, which energy store increases?

The elastic potential energy store of the spring increases.
