Velocity–Time Graphs Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What does the gradient (slope) of a velocity-time graph show?

Acceleration (in m/s^2).

How do you calculate acceleration from a straight section of a velocity-time graph?

Acceleration = change in velocity / time taken.

What does a horizontal line on a velocity-time graph mean?

Constant velocity, so acceleration is zero.

What does a straight line sloping upward on a velocity-time graph mean?

Uniform (constant) positive acceleration.

What does a straight line sloping downward on a velocity-time graph mean?

Uniform deceleration (negative acceleration).

What does the area under a velocity-time graph represent?

Displacement. If velocity stays positive, it equals distance travelled.

How do you find displacement from a triangular section on a velocity-time graph?

Use area of a triangle: 0.5 × base × height.

What does a point below the time axis on a velocity-time graph show?

Negative velocity, so motion in the opposite direction.

When finding total displacement, how do you treat areas below the time axis?

Count them as negative and subtract them.

How can you find acceleration at a point on a curved velocity-time graph?

Draw a tangent at that point and find its gradient.

What are the units of the area under a velocity-time graph if velocity is in m/s and time in s?

Metres (m).

How do you read the velocity at a given time on a velocity-time graph?

Go to that time on the axis and read the velocity value from the graph.
