Magnetic Fields Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a magnetic field?

The region around a magnet or current where magnetic forces act.

Which way do magnetic field lines point around a bar magnet?

From the north pole to the south pole, outside the magnet.

Where is the magnetic field strongest around a bar magnet?

At the poles (the ends of the magnet).

Why do magnetic field lines never cross?

Because at any point the field has only one direction.

How can iron filings show a magnetic field?

Place paper over the magnet. Sprinkle iron filings. Tap gently. The filings line up to show the field lines.

How do you map a magnetic field with a plotting compass?

Put a small compass near the magnet. Draw an arrow the way the needle points. Move it and repeat to trace a line from N to S.

What does a compass point to on Earth, and why?

It points towards Earth’s magnetic north, because the needle is a tiny bar magnet that lines up with Earth’s magnetic field.

What does a uniform magnetic field look like?

The lines are straight, parallel, and evenly spaced. The field has the same strength and direction everywhere.

What is the shape of the magnetic field around a straight current-carrying wire?

Concentric circles centred on the wire.

How can you find the direction of the field around a current-carrying wire?

Use the right-hand grip rule: thumb shows current, curled fingers show the field direction.

What affects the strength of the magnetic field around a wire?

It is stronger with a larger current and weaker further from the wire.

What is a solenoid and what is its magnetic field like?

A solenoid is a coil of wire. Its field is like a bar magnet with a north and south, and inside it is strong and nearly uniform.
