Le Chatelier’s Principle Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What does Le Chatelier's Principle state?

When a system at equilibrium is changed, the equilibrium shifts to oppose the change.

When can you apply Le Chatelier's Principle?

For a reversible reaction in a closed system that has reached equilibrium.

What happens to the equilibrium if you add more reactant?

It shifts to the products side to use up the extra reactant.

What happens to the equilibrium if you add more product?

It shifts to the reactants side to use up the extra product.

How does increasing pressure affect a gaseous equilibrium?

It shifts to the side with fewer gas molecules.

How does decreasing pressure affect a gaseous equilibrium?

It shifts to the side with more gas molecules.

What happens when you increase the temperature of a system at equilibrium?

The equilibrium shifts in the endothermic direction to absorb heat.

What happens when you decrease the temperature?

The equilibrium shifts in the exothermic direction to release heat.

For an exothermic forward reaction, how does raising temperature affect yield?

It lowers the product yield because the equilibrium shifts to the reactants.

Do catalysts change the position of equilibrium?

No. They speed up both forward and reverse reactions equally, so the position is unchanged.

Which equilibria are affected by changes in pressure?

Only equilibria involving gases, and only if the number of gas molecules is different on each side.

How can Le Chatelier's Principle be used to increase yield?

Choose conditions that shift equilibrium to the desired side, e.g. higher pressure if products have fewer gas molecules.
