Authentication and Encryption Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What does authentication mean?

Checking that a user is who they claim to be.

How is authentication different from authorisation?

Authentication checks identity. Authorisation decides what you are allowed to do.

Give two examples of authentication methods.

Passwords and fingerprints.

What makes a strong password?

At least 12 characters, mixed types, and unique for each account.

What is two-factor authentication (2FA)?

Logging in with two checks, such as a password and a phone code.

What is CAPTCHA used for during login?

To tell humans from bots and block automated attacks.

What is encryption?

Scrambling data with a key so only authorised people can read it.

What do plaintext and ciphertext mean?

Plaintext is readable data. Ciphertext is the scrambled result of encryption.

What is a key in encryption?

A secret value used to encrypt and decrypt data.

What is the difference between symmetric and asymmetric encryption?

Symmetric uses one shared key. Asymmetric uses a public key and a private key.

Which key do you use to encrypt a message to someone using public key encryption?

Use their public key to encrypt; they use their private key to decrypt.

What does end-to-end encryption do?

It means only the sender and the receiver can read the messages.
