Network Protocols: HTTP and HTTPS Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure.

What are HTTP and HTTPS used for?

They set rules for the web. They let browsers and servers request and send web pages.

What is the main difference between HTTP and HTTPS?

HTTP sends data in plain text. HTTPS encrypts data so others cannot read or change it.

What does it mean that HTTP is stateless?

Each request is separate. The server does not remember past requests.

Name two common HTTP request methods and what they do.

GET asks for a page or data. POST sends data to the server, for example a form.

Which port numbers do HTTP and HTTPS use by default?

HTTP uses port 80. HTTPS uses port 443.

What does the padlock icon in the browser address bar mean?

It shows the site uses HTTPS. The connection is encrypted.

What is a digital certificate in HTTPS used for?

It proves the website is genuine. It helps set up a secure link.

What does HTTP status code 404 mean?

Not Found. The server cannot find the page or file.

How does HTTP use the request–response model?

The browser sends a request to a web server. The server sends back a response, often an HTML page.

Why is HTTPS important when logging in or paying online?

It keeps your passwords and card details private. It stops others reading or changing them.
