TCP/IP Layers Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is the TCP/IP model?

A four-layer set of rules that shows how data moves across a network like the internet.

Name the four layers of the TCP/IP model in order (top to bottom).

Application, Transport, Internet, Link (also called Network Access).

What is the job of the Application layer?

It prepares data for sending and interprets received data for software on the device.

What is the job of the Transport layer?

It splits data into small pieces, adds port numbers, and makes sure pieces arrive in the right order (with TCP).

What is the job of the Internet layer?

It adds IP addresses and chooses a route between networks for each packet.

What is the job of the Link layer?

It sends data on the local network using hardware and MAC addresses over cables or Wi-Fi.

What is encapsulation?

Wrapping data with headers added by each layer as it moves down before sending.

What is decapsulation?

Unwrapping: each layer removes its header as data moves up at the receiver.

Why do we use layers in networking?

They make networks easier to build and fix, and one layer can change without others.

How do TCP and UDP differ at the Transport layer?

TCP is reliable and keeps order. UDP is faster and uses less extra data but does not guarantee delivery.

Which layers use IP and MAC addresses?

The Internet layer uses IP addresses; the Link layer uses MAC addresses.

What is a port number used for?

To send data to the correct app or service on a device.
