Arithmetic Operators Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

It adds numbers. Example: 3 + 4 = 7.

What does the – operator do?

It subtracts one number from another. Example: 9 – 2 = 7.

What does the * operator do?

It multiplies numbers. Example: 5 * 6 = 30.

What does the / operator do?

It divides numbers and can give a decimal answer. Example: 7 / 2 = 3.5.

What does DIV do?

What does MOD do?

It gives the remainder after division. Example: 7 MOD 2 = 1.

What does the ^ operator do?

It raises a number to a power. Example: 2 ^ 3 = 8.

What do brackets () do in an expression?

They make that part work first. Example: (2 + 3) * 4 = 20.

What is the default order of operations (BIDMAS)?

Brackets, Indices (powers), then Division and Multiplication, then Addition and Subtraction, left to right.

If two operators have the same priority, which side is done first?

Work from left to right. Example: 20 / 5 * 2 = 4 * 2 = 8.

What is the difference between / and DIV?

The / operator gives a decimal result; DIV gives the whole number part only. Example: 9 / 4 = 2.25, 9 DIV 4 = 2.

Why is dividing by zero an error?

You cannot divide by zero. It is not allowed, so the program gives an error.
