Validation and Authentication Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is validation in a program?

Checks on input to make sure it meets set rules. It reduces errors but does not prove the data is right.

What does a presence check do?

It makes sure a required field is not left blank.

What does a range check do?

It checks a value is between a set minimum and maximum.

What does a length check do?

It checks data is not too short or too long.

What does a type check do?

It checks the input is the right data type, like integer, real, or string.

What does a format check do?

It checks the input matches a pattern, like a UK postcode (e.g. AB1 2CD).

Why does validation not guarantee correct data?

A value can pass the rules but still be wrong, like a wrong age within the range.

What is authentication?

Proving a user is who they say they are before giving access.

Name two common authentication methods.

A username and password, and a fingerprint or face scan.

What is two-factor authentication (2FA)?

Logging in with two different checks, like a password plus a code sent to your phone.

Why do systems limit login attempts?

To stop guessing attacks. After a few tries, the account locks or waits.

What makes a strong password?

At least 12 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not use common words.
