Testing and Refinement Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is the main purpose of testing a program?

To find and fix bugs and to check it meets the requirements.

What is iterative testing?

Testing as you write the code, after each change. It helps catch errors early.

What is final (terminal) testing?

Testing the finished program to see if it meets the original needs.

What is a test plan or test table?

A table that lists each test, the input data, and the expected result.

What is normal test data?

Typical, valid inputs a user would enter.

What is boundary (extreme) test data?

Values at the edges of the allowed range, like the smallest and largest.

What is invalid test data?

Data of the right type but outside the allowed range. The program should reject it.

What is null (empty) test data?

No input at all. It checks the program handles blank entries.

What is a syntax error?

A mistake in the rules of the language, such as a missing bracket. It stops the code running.

What is a logic error?

The code runs but gives the wrong result. The steps in the algorithm are wrong.

What does a breakpoint do when debugging?

It pauses the program on a chosen line. This lets you check values step by step.

What does refinement mean in programming?

Improving code without changing what it does. It makes the code clearer and easier to maintain.
