Averages (Mean, Median, Mode) Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is the mean and how do you find it?

Add up all the values. Divide by how many values there are. Example: 2, 4, 10. Mean = (2+4+10) ÷ 3 = 5.33.

How do you find the median in a list with an odd number of values?

Order the numbers from small to large. The middle number is the median. Example: 3, 7, 9. Median = 7.

How do you find the median when there is an even number of values?

Order the numbers. Take the two middle numbers. Find their mean. Example: 2, 4, 8, 10. Median = (4+8) ÷ 2 = 6.

What is the mode?

The value that occurs most often. It can be a number or a category.

Can there be more than one mode, or none?

Yes. Two modes means bimodal. If no value repeats, there is no mode.

Which average is best when there is an extreme value (outlier)?

Use the median. It is not pulled by very high or very low values.

What happens to the mean if one value is very high or very low?

The mean moves towards that extreme. It is sensitive to outliers.

Which average would you use for the most common job type in a survey?

Use the mode. It shows the most common category.

How do you choose between mean, median, and mode?

Use the mean for typical values when there are no extremes. Use the median when the data have extremes or are skewed. Use the mode for the most common value or for categories.

How do you find the mean from a frequency table?

Multiply each value by its frequency. Add these totals. Divide by the total frequency.

What is a weighted mean?

An average where some values count more. Add value × weight for all items. Divide by the sum of the weights.

What is the modal class in grouped data?

The group with the highest frequency. It shows where most data lie.
