What does GDP stand for?

Gross Domestic Product.

What does a UK GDP growth chart show?

It shows how fast the UK economy is growing or shrinking over time, as a percentage change.

What is the difference between real and nominal GDP growth?

Real removes inflation; nominal includes it.

How can you tell if a chart shows quarter-on-quarter or year-on-year growth?

Look at labels. 'Quarter on quarter (QoQ)' means change from the last quarter. 'Year on year (YoY)' means change from the same quarter a year ago.

What does a value below 0% on a GDP growth chart mean?

The economy shrank. Output fell in that period.

When is the UK said to be in recession on a quarterly growth chart?

When quarterly GDP falls for two quarters in a row.

What does '2019 = 100' mean on a GDP index chart?

2019 is the base year. 100 is the 2019 level. 105 means 5% above 2019; 95 means 5% below.

How do you work out the percentage change from an index chart?

Use (new − old) / old x 100. Example: from 100 to 103 is 3%.

What does 'seasonally adjusted' mean on a UK growth chart?

Regular seasonal effects (like Christmas) are removed so quarters are easier to compare.

What is GDP per capita (per person) growth, and why use it?

It shows growth per person. It removes the effect of population change.

How can you tell if a chart shows GDP level or growth rate?

Check the y-axis. Percent (%) means growth rate. Pounds (£) or index values usually show the level.

What is a moving average or trend line on a GDP chart used for?

To smooth short-term ups and downs and show the underlying direction of growth.
