What is the process of deposition in coastal areas?

Deposition occurs when waves lose their energy and drop the sediment they are carrying.

This process forms depositional landforms such as beaches, spits, bars and sand dunes.

How do sandy and pebble beaches differ in their formation?

Sandy beaches form in shallow areas with low-energy waves, made up of fine sand particles.

Pebble beaches form where cliffs are eroded by high-energy waves, consisting of larger pebbles and stones.

What is a spit and how does it form?

A spit is an elongated stretch of sand or shingle that projects into the sea from the land, formed by longshore drift when there is a change in the coastline’s shape or at river mouths.

How are sand dunes formed?

Sand dunes form when wind carries sand particles landward, which are then deposited as the wind slows down due to obstacles like vegetation. Over time, these accumulate into dunes.

Describe three main types of sand dunes.

Crescentic (Barchan) Dunes: Crescent-shaped, with horns pointing downwind.

Linear (Seif) Dunes: Long, parallel ridges formed by unidirectional winds.

Star Dunes: Complex formations with multiple arms radiating in different directions.

What role does vegetation play in the stability of sand dunes?

Vegetation stabilises sand dunes by binding the sand with their root systems, reducing wind erosion, and promoting dune stability.

This allows more complex plant communities to establish.
