What were the Paris Peace Talks in the Vietnam War?

They were meetings held in Paris from 1968 to 1973 to try to end the Vietnam War. The talks brought together the USA, North Vietnam and their allies.

Why did US President Johnson agree to start peace talks in Paris in 1968?

The Tet Offensive showed the war was hard to win. There was huge protest and unrest in the USA, so Johnson wanted to seek peace.

Which four main sides were represented at the Paris Peace Talks?

The USA, South Vietnam, North Vietnam and the Vietcong (National Liberation Front).

Why did the early Paris Peace Talks make very little progress?

Both sides refused to give way on key points. The USA wanted both North and South Vietnamese troops to pull out, but North Vietnam wanted all US troops to leave first and for the South Vietnamese leader, Thieu, to be removed.

What were the secret Paris peace talks between Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho?

From 1969, US adviser Henry Kissinger held secret meetings in Paris with North Vietnamese leader Le Duc Tho. They tried to find a deal because the public talks were stuck.

Name one reason pressure grew on both sides to reach a peace agreement by the early 1970s.

US losses and costs were very high and many Americans wanted their soldiers home. North Vietnam also wanted US bombing to stop and knew the USA was under pressure to leave.

In which month and year was the Paris Peace Agreement (Paris Peace Accords) finally signed?

It was signed in January 1973.

What did the Paris Peace Agreement say about fighting and US bombing in Vietnam?

There had to be a ceasefire across Vietnam. The USA agreed to stop all bombing of North Vietnam.

What did the Paris Peace Agreement say about US troops and prisoners of war (POWs)?

All US and other foreign troops had to leave Vietnam within 60 days. Both sides agreed to return all prisoners of war.

What did the Paris Peace Agreement decide about the future government of South Vietnam?

There would be free elections in the South. A National Council, including members from both sides, would organise a new government.

Why did South Vietnamese leader President Thieu dislike the Paris Peace Agreement?

North Vietnamese troops were allowed to stay in the South, which made him feel unsafe. He thought the USA was abandoning him and that his government might be weakened or replaced.

What did the Paris Peace Agreement achieve, and what was its main weakness?

It ended direct US fighting in Vietnam and brought US prisoners of war home. But the ceasefire was weak, and fighting soon started again between North and South Vietnam.
