When did the Potsdam Conference take place, and what was its main purpose?

It was held near Berlin from July to August 1945. Its main purpose was to decide how to deal with defeated Germany and to plan the post-war world.

Which leaders attended the Potsdam Conference, and which countries did they represent?

Harry Truman led the USA, Joseph Stalin led the USSR, and Winston Churchill, then Clement Attlee, led Britain.

How had the leadership of the USA and Britain changed between Yalta and Potsdam?

In April 1945 President Roosevelt of the USA died and Harry Truman took over. In July 1945 Winston Churchill lost the British election and Clement Attlee became prime minister.

How was Truman's attitude to Stalin different from Roosevelt's at Potsdam?

Truman distrusted Stalin more than Roosevelt had. He was strongly anti-communist and less willing to make compromises with the Soviet Union.

How did Churchill being replaced by Attlee affect the Potsdam Conference?

Churchill was an experienced war leader with a strong personal role in talks. Attlee was quieter and more focused on rebuilding Britain, so Britain had less influence at Potsdam than before.

How did the American atomic bomb affect the Potsdam Conference?

During the conference Truman told Stalin that the USA had a new, very powerful weapon. This made Truman more confident and made Stalin more suspicious, which increased tension between them.

What did the Allies agree about how to treat Germany at Potsdam?

They agreed to demilitarise Germany by removing its armed forces, to punish Nazi leaders, to bring back democracy, and to control Germany together through four occupation zones.

What did the Allies decide about German reparations at Potsdam?

Each country would take reparations, in money and goods, from its own zone of Germany. Because the USSR had suffered most damage, it was also allowed extra reparations from the western zones.

What did the Potsdam Conference decide about Poland and its borders?

The Allies moved Poland's western border to the Oder–Neisse line, giving Poland some former German land. They also accepted that Poland would have a government friendly to the USSR.

How did the Potsdam Conference and the new leaders affect relations between the USA and the USSR?

The tougher attitude of Truman and the arguments at Potsdam increased mistrust between the superpowers. The wartime alliance began to break down and relations moved towards the Cold War.
