Muscle Contractions Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a muscle contraction?

When a muscle develops tension. It may shorten, lengthen, or stay the same length.

What is an isotonic contraction?

A contraction where the muscle changes length to move a joint.

What are the two types of isotonic contraction?

Concentric and eccentric.

What is a concentric contraction?

The muscle shortens while under tension to produce movement. Example: lifting in a biceps curl.

What is an eccentric contraction?

The muscle lengthens while under tension to control movement. Example: lowering a weight or landing from a jump.

What is an isometric contraction?

The muscle contracts but does not change length, so the joint does not move. Example: holding a plank.

In the upward phase of a biceps curl, what contraction happens in the biceps?

Concentric contraction.

In the downward phase of a biceps curl, what contraction happens in the biceps?

Eccentric contraction.

When standing up from a squat, what contraction happens in the quadriceps?

Concentric contraction.

When lowering into a squat or landing from a jump, what contraction happens in the quadriceps?

Eccentric contraction.

In a plank or when holding the set position at the sprint start, what type of contraction keeps you still?

Isometric contraction.

How can you tell if a contraction is concentric or eccentric?

If the working muscle shortens as it creates force, it is concentric. If it lengthens to control movement, it is eccentric.
