Early Brain Development Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is the neural tube?

An early hollow structure that later forms the brain and spinal cord.

At about how many weeks after conception do the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain first appear?

Around 3 to 4 weeks after conception.

What happens to the forebrain at about 5 weeks of development?

It splits into two parts that later form the cortex and the thalamus.

What does the cerebellum do?

It helps with balance, posture and fine movement.

What does the medulla do?

It controls automatic actions like breathing and heartbeat.

What does the thalamus do?

It relays sensory messages to the cortex.

What is the cortex and what does it do?

The cortex is the brain’s outer layer; it handles thinking, memory and language.

What is the brain stem?

It links the brain to the spinal cord and includes the medulla, which controls vital functions.

What is a synapse?

A tiny gap where one neuron passes a message to another using chemicals.

What is synaptic pruning?

The brain removes unused connections to work more efficiently.

What is brain plasticity?

The brain’s ability to change by making and strengthening connections, especially in early life.

What is myelination?

A fatty coating forms on axons to speed up nerve signals; it continues into adolescence.
