What is baptism in Christianity?

A ceremony using water to show cleansing from sin and new life in Christ. It welcomes a person into the Church.

Which Christian groups practise infant baptism?

Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Orthodox churches.

Why do some churches baptise babies?

They believe it removes original sin and welcomes the child into God's family.

What happens in an infant baptism service?

The priest or minister makes the sign of the cross, and parents and godparents make promises. Water is poured on the baby's head; a candle may be given.

What do godparents do at an infant baptism?

They speak for the baby and reject evil. They promise to help raise the child as a Christian.

Which churches usually do believers' baptism?

Baptist and Pentecostal churches, and some other evangelical churches.

Why do some churches only baptise believers?

They say baptism should follow personal repentance and faith. Babies cannot choose or confess faith.

How is believers' baptism carried out?

The person gives a short testimony of faith. Then they are fully immersed in water in a pool called a baptistry.

What does going under and coming out of the water symbolise?

Dying to sin and rising to new life with Christ. It also shows washing away sin.

What service might a Baptist church hold for babies instead of baptism?

A dedication or thanksgiving service. Parents thank God and make promises, but no baptism happens.

What Bible passage is often used to support baptism?

Matthew 28:19, where Jesus tells his followers to baptise. Jesus' own baptism is another example.

Give two key differences between infant baptism and believers' baptism.
