What is the Catholic Funeral Rite?

It is the set of prayers and actions the Church uses to say goodbye to someone who has died.

What are the three main stages of a Catholic funeral?

The Vigil (prayer), the Funeral Liturgy (often a Requiem Mass), and the Rite of Committal (burial or cremation).

What is the main purpose of the Catholic funeral rite?

To entrust the person to God's care and to comfort family and friends.

What happens at the Vigil?

People gather to pray, hear readings from the Bible, and share memories. The body may be present.

What happens during the Funeral Liturgy?

There are Bible readings, prayers, a homily about hope in Christ, and, if it is a Mass, Holy Communion is received and the Mass is offered for the person who has died.

What is the Rite of Committal?

The final prayers at the graveside or crematorium, when the body or ashes are laid to rest and blessed.

Why is the coffin sprinkled with holy water?

It reminds everyone of the person’s baptism and new life in Christ.

What does the white pall placed on the coffin symbolise?

The baptismal garment, hope of resurrection, and that all are equal in Christ.

Why is the Paschal candle used at a funeral?

It shows the light of the risen Christ and hope of eternal life.

Why is incense used in the funeral liturgy?

It honours the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit and shows prayers rising to God.

What is the Catholic teaching on cremation and ashes?

Cremation is allowed, but ashes must be treated with respect and kept in a sacred place, not scattered or kept at home.

Why do Catholics pray for the dead at a funeral?

To ask God to forgive their sins and welcome them into heaven, and to help the living find hope.
