Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It lasts 29 or 30 days, and its start date moves each year.

When does the daily fast start and end in Ramadan?

It starts at first light (dawn) and ends at sunset. Local prayer timetables show the exact times.

What must Muslims avoid during the fasting hours?

They must not eat, drink (not even water), smoke, or have sexual relations. They should also avoid lying, swearing, and bad behaviour.

All healthy adult Muslims who have reached puberty should fast. It is a duty unless they have a valid reason not to.

How is the start of Ramadan decided in many communities?

Some begin when the new moon is seen with the eye. Others use calculation, so start dates can differ.
