In Mark's Gospel, where is the story of the Syrophoenician woman found?

Mark 7:24-30.

In which region did Jesus meet the Syrophoenician woman, and why is it important?

Near Tyre, a Gentile area. Jesus was outside Jewish territory.

Who was the Syrophoenician woman?

A non-Jewish (Gentile) mother from Syrian Phoenicia.

What problem did she bring to Jesus?

Her young daughter had an unclean spirit (a demon).

What did the woman do when she heard Jesus was nearby?

She came, fell at his feet, and begged him to drive out the demon.

What was Jesus' first reply to her request?

He said the children should be fed first and not give their bread to the dogs. This meant Israel first.

What did the woman answer, and what does it show?

Even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs. It shows humble, persistent faith.

What happened to the daughter?

Jesus healed her at a distance. The demon left and she was well.

What does this story teach about who can receive Jesus' help?

Gentiles as well as Jews. God's blessings are for all who have faith.

How does this story link to Jesus' teaching on clean and unclean in Mark 7?

After teaching that all foods are clean, Jesus helps a Gentile. He crosses purity barriers.
