What is a social issue?

A problem in society that affects many people. Example: poverty or discrimination.

Give two examples of social issues in the UK.

Poverty and homelessness. Other examples include unemployment and crime.

What is the difference between a personal problem and a social issue?

A personal problem affects one person or a small group. A social issue affects many people and has social causes.

What is relative poverty?

Being poor compared to the average standard of living in your society. Often measured as living on less than about 60% of the typical household income.

What is absolute poverty?

Not having enough money for basic needs like food, clean water, heat, and shelter. It can be life threatening.

What does social exclusion mean?

Being shut out from full participation in society. This can be due to low income, poor housing, or discrimination.

How can discrimination be a social issue?

It is unfair treatment based on things like gender, ethnicity, age, or disability. It can limit people’s chances and rights.

Why is unemployment seen as a social issue?

It can harm people’s income, health, and housing. When many people cannot find work, the whole community is affected.

What is homelessness?

Not having a safe, stable home. This can mean sleeping rough or staying in temporary housing.

What is meant by health inequalities?

Differences in health and life expectancy between groups. For example, poorer areas often have worse health.

How do sociologists use data to study social issues?

They look for patterns and trends in statistics and surveys. This shows who is affected and how big the issue is.

What is a social policy?

A plan or law by the government to tackle a social issue. Example: raising the minimum wage to reduce poverty.
