Correcting Eye Defects Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Which type of lens corrects short-sightedness (myopia), and how?

A concave (diverging) lens. It spreads light so distant images focus on the retina.

Which type of lens corrects long-sightedness (hyperopia), and how?

A convex (converging) lens. It brings light together so near images focus on the retina.

How do glasses correct focusing problems in the eye?

They bend light before it enters the eye so the image falls on the retina.

Name two alternatives to glasses for correcting vision.

Contact lenses and laser eye surgery.

What is one advantage and one risk of contact lenses?

Advantage: Wide field of view. Risk: Eye infection if not cleaned well.

Why must contact lenses be kept clean?

To stop germs entering the eye and causing infection.

How does laser eye surgery correct short-sightedness?

It flattens the cornea, so it bends light less and the focus moves back onto the retina.

How does laser eye surgery correct long-sightedness?

It makes the cornea steeper, so it bends light more and the focus moves forward onto the retina.

Give one benefit and one risk of laser eye surgery.

Benefit: Clear vision without glasses. Risk: Dry eyes, infection, or a change that is too strong or too weak.

What is lens replacement surgery?

The eye’s natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens to focus light on the retina.

When might lens replacement surgery be used?

For severe focusing problems, or when cataracts are present.

Why do many older people use reading glasses?

Their lens gets less flexible with age, so a convex lens helps with close work.
