It is when the pancreas makes little or no insulin. This makes blood glucose too high.

Which hormone is lacking in Type 1 diabetes, and what does it do?

Insulin. It lowers blood glucose by helping cells take in glucose.

Which organ fails to make enough insulin in Type 1 diabetes?

The pancreas.

What causes Type 1 diabetes?

The immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin.

Name two common symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.

Feeling very thirsty and needing to urinate often. Tiredness and weight loss are also common.

How is Type 1 diabetes managed day to day?

With insulin injections or a pump. People also monitor blood glucose and match food and exercise.

Why is insulin given by injection, not as a tablet?

The gut would break down insulin because it is a protein.

What should someone with Type 1 diabetes do before meals?

Check blood glucose and plan their insulin dose. Many count the grams of carbohydrate.

What happens to blood glucose after a meal if insulin is not taken?

It stays too high because glucose cannot enter cells or be stored.

What is hypoglycaemia, and how can it happen in Type 1 diabetes?

It is low blood glucose. It can happen after too much insulin or hard exercise without food.

How can mild hypoglycaemia be treated quickly?

Eat or drink something sugary, like glucose tablets or fruit juice.

What can happen if Type 1 diabetes is poorly controlled for a long time?

It can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels.
