Abiotic and Biotic Factors Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What does an abiotic factor mean?

A non-living part of the environment that affects living things.

What does a biotic factor mean?

A living part of the environment that affects other living things.

Name four abiotic factors that affect living things.

Light intensity, temperature, moisture level, and soil pH and mineral content.

Name three biotic factors that can affect a population.

Availability of food, number of predators, and competition.

How can low light intensity affect plant growth?

It reduces photosynthesis, so plants grow more slowly and fewer survive.

How can a change in temperature affect where species live?

Each species has an optimum temperature. If it gets too hot or too cold, they may not survive or breed, so their distribution changes.

How can soil pH and mineral content affect plant growth?

If the pH is unsuitable, or minerals are low, plants cannot take in nutrients well, so growth is poor.

Why is oxygen concentration in water important for aquatic animals?

They need dissolved oxygen for respiration. Low oxygen can kill them, so fewer survive.

How can carbon dioxide concentration affect photosynthesis in plants?

Higher carbon dioxide can increase photosynthesis up to a point. Low carbon dioxide limits growth.

What is competition, and is it an abiotic or biotic factor?

Competition is when organisms try for the same resources, like food or mates. It is a biotic factor.

How can the availability of food affect the size of a population?

More food supports more individuals, so numbers can rise. Little food leads to fewer surviving, so numbers fall.

How can pathogens affect a population?

Disease can spread and kill or weaken organisms, so survival and reproduction drop and the population falls.
