Conservation of Animal Species Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

What does conservation of animal species mean?

Protecting and managing animals and their habitats so they do not die out.

What is an endangered species?

A species with very low numbers that faces a high risk of extinction.

What is a captive breeding programme?

Planned breeding of endangered animals in zoos or wildlife parks to raise their numbers.

How do captive breeding programmes reduce inbreeding?

They keep family records and swap animals between zoos so unrelated animals mate.

What is reintroduction?

Releasing captive-bred animals back into the wild to rebuild wild populations.

Give one reason reintroduction can be difficult.

Animals may lack survival skills, or there may be too little safe habitat.

What is a protected area?

Land or sea set aside, like a nature reserve, where habitats and animals are safeguarded.

How can laws help conserve animal species?

They can ban hunting or trade, set quotas and seasons, and protect key habitats.

What is CITES?

A global agreement that controls trade in endangered species to help stop extinction.

What is genetic diversity, and why is it important in conservation?

It is the variety of genes in a population; high variety helps species cope with change and disease.

What is a wildlife corridor and why is it used?

A link between habitats that lets animals move and breed, keeping populations healthy.

Why is monitoring animal populations important in conservation?

It tracks numbers and breeding success, so plans can be changed if they are not working.
