Calculating Heart Rate, Stroke Volume and Cardiac Output Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is heart rate and what unit is it measured in?

The number of heart beats each minute, measured in beats per minute (bpm).

What is stroke volume and what unit is it measured in?

The volume of blood pumped by one ventricle in one beat, measured in millilitres (mL) per beat.

What is cardiac output and what unit is it measured in?

The volume of blood pumped by the heart each minute, measured in mL per minute (mL/min) or litres per minute (L/min).

What formula links cardiac output, stroke volume and heart rate?

Cardiac output (mL per minute) = stroke volume (mL per beat) x heart rate (beats per minute).

How do you calculate heart rate from a pulse counted for a set time?

Heart rate (bpm) = number of beats / time in minutes. If counted in seconds, use (beats / seconds) x 60.

You count 20 beats in 15 seconds. What is the heart rate?

(20 / 15) x 60 = 80 bpm.

A person has a heart rate of 72 bpm and a stroke volume of 70 mL. What is their cardiac output?

70 x 72 = 5040 mL/min, which is 5.04 L/min.

How do you find stroke volume if you know cardiac output and heart rate?

Stroke volume (mL per beat) = cardiac output (mL per minute) / heart rate (beats per minute).

Cardiac output is 4.8 L/min and heart rate is 80 bpm. What is the stroke volume?

4.8 L/min = 4800 mL/min; 4800 / 80 = 60 mL per beat.

How do you find heart rate if you know cardiac output and stroke volume?

Heart rate (bpm) = cardiac output (mL per minute) / stroke volume (mL per beat).

Cardiac output is 5.6 L/min and stroke volume is 70 mL. What is the heart rate?

5.6 L/min = 5600 mL/min; 5600 / 70 = 80 bpm.

How do you convert between millilitres (mL) and cubic centimetres (cm^3)?

1 mL = 1 cm^3 (they are the same volume).
