Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

Name the five main parts of a typical animal cell.

Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, and ribosomes.

What is the job of the nucleus?

It controls the cell and contains the genetic material (DNA).

What happens in the cytoplasm?

It is a jelly-like fluid where most chemical reactions happen.

What does the cell membrane do?

It controls what goes into and out of the cell.

What is the function of mitochondria?

They are the site of aerobic respiration, which releases energy.

What do ribosomes do?

They make proteins.

Which three parts are found in plant cells but not in animal cells?

A cell wall, chloroplasts, and a large permanent vacuole.

What is the plant cell wall made of and what is its role?

It is made of cellulose. It supports the cell and keeps its shape.

What do chloroplasts do?

They contain chlorophyll and absorb light for photosynthesis.

What is inside the large permanent vacuole and what does it do?

It holds cell sap and helps keep the cell firm.

Which is usually larger: a plant cell or an animal cell? Give typical sizes.

A plant cell. Plant cells are about 10–100 micrometres (µm); animal cells are about 10–30 micrometres (µm).

What type of cells do animals and plants have?

Eukaryotic cells. They have a nucleus.
