What does ‘profit margin’ show?

How much profit is made from each £1 of sales, shown as a percentage.

What is the formula for Gross Profit Margin?

Gross profit margin (%) = (Gross profit / Sales revenue) x 100.

What is the formula for Net Profit Margin (profit for the year margin)?

Net profit margin (%) = (Net profit / Sales revenue) x 100.

How do you work out gross profit before finding the margin?

Gross profit = Sales revenue – Cost of sales.

Sales revenue is £50,000 and cost of sales is £30,000. What is the gross profit margin?

Gross profit = £50,000 – £30,000 = £20,000. GPM = £20,000 / £50,000 x 100 = 40%.

Sales revenue is £80,000 and net profit is £8,000. What is the net profit margin?

NPM = £8,000 / £80,000 x 100 = 10%.

What does a 40% gross profit margin mean?

The business makes 40p gross profit for every £1 of sales.

What is the key difference between gross profit margin and net profit margin?

Gross profit margin uses gross profit (after cost of sales). Net profit margin uses net profit (after all other expenses).

Which margin is usually higher, gross or net, and why?

Gross profit margin is higher because it does not include other expenses like rent and wages.

How can a business improve its gross profit margin?

Raise selling price or cut cost of sales, such as buying cheaper stock or reducing waste.

If gross profit margin is 25% and sales revenue is £12,000, what is the gross profit?

Gross profit = 25% x £12,000 = £3,000.

If the net profit margin rises from 8% to 12%, what does that tell you?

The firm now keeps more profit from each £1 of sales. Costs fell as a share of sales, or prices increased.
