What is revenue (also called turnover)?

The money a business earns from selling its goods or services.

How do you calculate total revenue?

Total revenue = price per unit x quantity sold.

What is the difference between sales volume and sales revenue?

Sales volume is the number of units sold. Sales revenue is the money made from those sales.

What are fixed costs?

Costs that do not change with output, such as rent or business rates.

What are variable costs?

Costs that change with output, such as raw materials or packaging.

How do you calculate total variable cost?

Total variable cost = variable cost per unit x number of units.

What are total costs and how are they calculated?

Total costs = fixed costs + total variable costs.

What is profit and how do you calculate it?

Profit = total revenue – total costs.

What is a loss?

A loss happens when total costs are greater than total revenue.

What is average unit cost and how do you find it?

Average unit cost = total costs / number of units produced.

What is the difference between gross profit and net profit?

Gross profit is revenue minus cost of sales (direct costs of making or buying the goods sold). Net profit is gross profit minus all other costs.

A shop sells 120 T-shirts at £8 each. Variable cost is £3 per shirt. Fixed costs are £200. What is the profit?

Revenue = 120 x £8 = £960. Variable cost = 120 x £3 = £360. Total cost = £360 + £200 = £560. Profit = £960 – £560 = £400.
