Understanding Much Ado About Nothing

Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing is set in Messina, Italy. The play features two love stories:

  • Claudio and Hero, two young lovers, are set to be married. However, Don John starts a scandal that convinces Claudio that Hero is unfaithful. He publicly shamed her at the altar, causing her to faint. Hero’s father falsely declares her dead to buy time to prove her innocence. When Claudio agrees to marry Leonato’s mysterious niece as punishment for causing Hero’s “death”, he is overjoyed to find Hero at the wedding, and they marry.
  • Beatrice and Benedick both claim to despise love and constantly bicker in humorous ways. Their friends successfully trick them into falling in love with each other. After Hero is disgraced at the altar, Beatrice asks Benedick to challenge his friend Claudio to a duel to prove his love, which Benedick does. Ultimately, they realise they have been tricked into loving each other but decide to marry anyway.

The major themes of the play are love, deception and misunderstanding.

Act 1

Governor Leonato welcomes home soldiers after their battle:

  • Don Pedro is the Prince of Aragon. He reconciles with his half-brother, Don John, who led a failed rebellion against him during the recent war.
  • Benedick is a proclaimed bachelor. He engages in witty arguments and jokes with Beatrice, Leonato’s niece.
  • Claudio is a young soldier who fought brilliantly under Don Pedro. He falls in love with Hero, Leonato’s daughter.

Claudio confides in Benedick about his love for Hero. Benedick mocks him, and tells Don Pedro, who plans to help Claudio win Hero’s heart. He intends to disguise himself as Claudio during a masked dance to court Hero on Claudio’s behalf. Antonio overhears and misunderstands this plan, thinking Don Pedro loves Hero, and informs Leonato.

Claudio confides in Benedick about his love for Hero. Benedick mocks him, and tells Don Pedro, who plans to help Claudio win Hero’s heart. He intends to disguise himself as Claudio during a masked dance to court Hero on Claudio’s behalf. Antonio’s servant overhears and misunderstands this plan, thinking Don Pedro loves Hero, and informs Leonato.

Don John hears about Claudio’s love for Hero and the plan for his half-brother, Don Pedro, to help with the courting. Filled with hatred for Claudio and Don Pedro, he plots with his follower Borachio to sabotage the plan.

Act 2

The main characters, all wearing masks, attend the masked ball hosted by Leonato. Beatrice tells her cousin, Hero, and uncle, Leonato, that she never wants to marry. Don Pedro woos Hero on Claudio’s behalf. Meanwhile, Don John and Borachio deceive Claudio, making him believe Don Pedro is wooing Hero for himself. Beatrice insults Benedick, pretending not to know who he is, and he storms off angrily.

Don Pedro announces that Hero and Claudio will be wed in a week. Claudio is delighted, no longer suspicious of Don Pedro. However, Don John sees that his meddling has been unsuccessful and vows to ruin Claudio and Hero’s wedding. He and Borachio plan to make Claudio believe that Hero has been unfaithful. To do this, Borachio will sleep with Hero’s maid, Margaret, who will wear Hero’s clothes, on a balcony where Claudio can see them.

Don Pedro sets a challenge for the group: to make Benedick and Beatrice fall in love. Knowing Benedick is overhearing them, they talk about how Beatrice is in love with Benedick. Believing what he has heard, Benedick reacts by being kind and flirtatious with Beatrice, who is puzzled by his change in behaviour.

Act 3

Hero and her maids, Margaret and Ursula, trick Beatrice into believing that Benedick loves her. Beatrice decides it would be cruel to let Benedick suffer heartbreak over her unanswered love.

Don John deceitfully informs Don Pedro and Claudio that Hero is an unfaithful woman. He tells them to watch Hero’s window that evening. Claudio swears that if he sees any proof of her unfaithfulness, he will shame her publicly at their wedding, saying:

“If I see anything tonight why I should not marry her, tomorrow in the congregation, where I should wed, there will I shame her.”

Later, Claudio witnesses Margaret and Borachio together, mistaking Margaret for Hero, and he is devastated.

The scene shifts to the Messina neighbourhood watchmen, including Dogberry, the head constable, and Verges, the deputy. They overhear Borachio boasting to his friend Conrade about the plan to deceive Claudio. The watchmen arrest Borachio and Conrade and try to explain the plot to Leonato, but they give a confused account, and he doesn’t understand who they are referring to.

Act 4

At Hero and Claudio’s wedding, Claudio publicly accuses Hero of being unfaithful. The shock causes Hero to faint. The priest believes Hero is innocent and suggests that Leonato announce that she died from disgrace to buy time to prove her innocence. Leonato follows the priest’s advice, and Benedick and Beatrice are made aware of this plan.

Beatrice, outraged, asks Benedick to challenge Claudio to a duel to defend Hero’s honour. Reluctantly, Benedick agrees.

Meanwhile, Borachio, while in custody, confesses to the watchmen about Don John’s scheme.

Act 5

Leonato confronts Claudio, swearing revenge for ruining his daughter’s reputation. Benedick, also believing that Claudio lied about Hero, challenges him to a duel the following day.

The watchmen reveal what Borachio has told them about the plot to frame Hero. Realising he has been tricked, Claudio is distraught and full of guilt for falsely disgracing Hero. He begs Leonato for forgiveness. Leonato demands that Claudio read a poem at Hero’s grave and also says Claudio must marry his niece, whom Claudio cannot meet until the wedding. Claudio agrees to this. Following the exposure of his betrayal, we discover that Don John has fled Messina.

At the wedding, Claudio is presented with Leonato’s apparent niece, who wears a mask. When she lifts the mask, it is revealed that Hero is the secret bride. Claudio is very pleased and relieved by this development, and the two of them get married. Beatrice and Benedick realise that they have been tricked into loving each other by their friends, but decide to marry as well. Benedick asks for music to dance to before the weddings, saying, “Strike up, pipers.”
