Case Studies: Renewable Energy Projects in the UK

Ray Valley Solar Park

In 2022, in Arncott, Oxfordshire, a 19.5 GWh solar farm was established near a Ministry of Defence logistics site and Bullingdon Prison. Arncott has a small population of 1,738 and is considered relatively affluent, with average house prices around £385,000.

The solar park was developed by Low Carbon Hub, an Oxfordshire-based social enterprise that specialises in initiating projects to boost renewable energy production. It was funded by investment in their community energy fund, a loan from Triodos Bank and Oxford City Council as well as some grant funding through Project LEO (Local Energy Oxfordshire).

Named Ray Valley Solar, the park was connected to the national grid in July 2022.

  • It stands as the largest community-owned solar park in the UK, generating 19.5 GWh of green electricity annually, enough to power 6,000 homes.
  • Surplus energy generated by the park is purchased by the national grid, providing financial returns to the project and thereby making funds available for the local community.

The Low Carbon Hub states that the project will liberate energy spending in the local community, reallocating £2.6 million previously spent on energy. Over the project’s lifetime, it is expected to contribute approximately £13 million back to the community through energy savings and other benefits.

Rampion Wind Farm, Sussex Coast

Rampion is a company that completed the construction of a large offshore wind farm in 2018, located off the coast of Sussex towns Worthing, Shoreham-by-Sea, and the city of Brighton & Hove. The farm, costing £1.3 billion to build, spans an area of 72 km², situated between 13 and 20 kilometres from the coast.

The wind turbines are painted yellow at the base, transitioning to white towards the top, and they stand out against the horizon.
AdvantagesDisadvantages
The wind farm generates 400 megawatts of energy, enough to power half of the homes in Sussex.Construction increased boat traffic in the English Channel, leading to water pollution.
Brighton & Hove council has stated that the energy generated helps the city in reducing its carbon emissions. The turbines pose a risk to birds using the channel as a migratory path, potentially causing fatalities or disrupting their natural behaviour.
Maintenance by Rampion has created 60-85 permanent jobs in the local area. Some locals have expressed concerns that the turbines ruin the aesthetic of the coastline.
The wind farm serves as an educational tool, promoting discussions around climate change and renewable energy.
The hundreds of contractors brought in to build the turbines have boosted the local economies of the coastal towns and cities through their spending.

The wind farm is one of many in the UK, a country that benefits from an abundant wind resource. An extension, known as Rampion 2, which is proposed to increase the wind farm’s energy generation by an additional 1,200 megawatts, is currently under consideration for construction near the original site. In September 2023, plans for Rampion 2 advanced, with construction approval being sought for 2026.
