Negative Indices

As we already saw in standard form, when we would write large or small numbers in the form N\times { 10 }^{ n } where 1\le N<10 and n as an integer.

Examples

  • { 2 }^{ (-3) }={ (\frac { 1 }{ 2 } })^{ 3 }=\frac { 1 }{ 8 }
  • { 5 }^{ (-2) }=(\frac { 1 }{ 5 } )^{ 2 }=\frac { 1 }{ 25 }
  • { 3 }^{ (-5) }=(\frac { 1 }{ 4 } )^{ 1 }=\frac { 1 }{ 4 }
  • { 0.1 }^{ (-1) }=(\frac { 1 }{ 0.1 } )=10
  • { -2 }^{ -3 }=\frac { 1 }{ { 2 }^{ 2 } } =\frac { 1 }{ -8 } =\frac { -1 }{ 8 }
