Percentages

A percentage is a proportion of a whole number per 100 parts. The word percent comes from the term ‘per cent’ being put together which means ‘per 100 parts’. Therefore, 23% is the same as 23 parts out of 100 equalling \frac { 23 }{ 100 }.

Percentages along with fractions and ratios are just ways of representing numbers as part of a whole number.

To find a percentage of a whole number, we first divide by 100 and then multiply by the fraction

Example

To find 23% of 465, we divide 465 by 100 to get 4.65 and then multiply by 23 to get 106.95. Therefore 23% of 465 is 106.95.
