Absorption and Egestion Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Where does most digestion take place?

Most digestion takes place in the small intestine.

What are the main adaptations of the small intestine for absorption?

The small intestine has a thin wall, many villi, and a network of capillaries to efficiently absorb nutrients.

What are villi and why are they important?

Villi are finger-like structures in the small intestine that increase the surface area for nutrient absorption.

What is the role of the large intestine in digestion?

The large intestine absorbs water from undigested food and passes the remaining waste out of the body as faeces (egestion).

How does the network of capillaries in the villi aid absorption?

The capillaries carry absorbed nutrients into the bloodstream, increasing the concentration gradient and making absorption more efficient.

What is the difference between egestion and excretion?

Egestion is the removal of undigested food, while excretion is the removal of waste products the body no longer needs.
