What is digestion?

Digestion is the process of breaking down the food we eat into nutrients that the body can use.

What happens in the mouth during digestion?

In the mouth, teeth break down food into smaller pieces (chewing). Saliva enzymes break down large molecules, and the tongue rolls the food into a ball to be swallowed.

What is the role of the stomach in digestion?

The stomach contains enzymes for digestion, hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria, and muscles that churn the food.

What are villi and where are they found?

Villi are finger-like structures in the walls of the small intestine that increase surface area and speed up nutrient absorption.

What does the liver produce and what is its function in digestion?

The liver produces bile, which helps break down fats in food and neutralise stomach acid.

What is the role of the pancreas in digestion?

The pancreas produces digestive enzymes (carbohydrase, protease and lipase) that speed up digestive reactions.
