What is a food chain?

A food chain is a sequence that shows the feeding relationships of organisms in an ecosystem and the transfer of energy from one organism to another.

What are producers and consumers in a food chain?

Producers are organisms that produce their own food through photosynthesis (e.g., green plants).

Consumers are organisms that eat other organisms, including primary consumers (herbivores/omnivores), secondary consumers, and tertiary consumers (often carnivores).

Give an example of a simple food chain.

Grass → Grasshopper → Bird → Snake

How is energy lost at each step of the food chain?

Energy is lost through movement, parts of the organism that cannot be eaten, waste (e.g., urine and faeces), and keeping warm.

What are predators and prey?

Predators are animals that naturally hunt and eat other animals. Prey are the animals that are hunted and eaten by predators.

What is a food web?

A food web is a larger network of interconnected food chains, showing the complex feeding relationships within an ecosystem.
