What is implantation?

Implantation is the process where the fertilised egg implants into the uterine wall and begins to divide and grow.

What is the role of the placenta?

The placenta provides nutrients and oxygen to the foetus and removes waste products through the umbilical cord. It attaches to the uterine wall and connects to the foetus.

How does the foetus receive oxygen and nutrients?

Oxygen and nutrients diffuse from the mother’s blood to the foetus’s blood through the placenta.

What happens during birth?

During birth, the cervix relaxes and widens, the uterus contracts to push the baby out, and the umbilical cord is cut once the baby is born. The placenta is also expelled.

How can smoking during pregnancy affect the baby?

Smoking during pregnancy can reduce the amount of oxygen in the mother’s bloodstream, potentially leading to premature birth.

How can alcohol consumption during pregnancy affect the baby?

Alcohol consumption can harm the baby’s nervous system.
