Seeds and Fruit Formation Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

What is germination?

Germination is the process by which seeds begin to grow into plants.

How do seeds form after fertilisation?

After fertilisation, the ovules inside the flower develop into seeds, and the ovary surrounding them becomes the fruit, which may contain one or more seeds.

What are the three main features of a seed?

The three main features of a seed are the seed coat (a tough, protective outer layer), the embryo (young root and shoot), and the food store (a source of energy for the seed as it grows).

What does the seed coat do?

The seed coat is a tough, protective outer layer that protects the seed.

What conditions are needed for a seed to germinate?

A seed needs sufficient water, oxygen, appropriate temperature and light to germinate and grow into a plant.

How do the shoot and root grow during germination?

During germination, the shoot grows upwards towards the light, while the root grows downwards towards water and nutrients in the soil.
