What are the main organs of the female reproductive system?

The main organs of the female reproductive system are the ovaries, oviducts (fallopian tubes), uterus, cervix and vagina.

What is the function of the ovaries?

The ovaries produce and release eggs (ova). Each ovary contains many undeveloped eggs, and during a menstrual cycle, one mature egg is typically released.

What role do the oviducts (fallopian tubes) play in reproduction?

The oviducts transport mature eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. During ovulation, a mature egg travels through a fallopian tube, where it may be fertilised by sperm.

What is the function of the uterus?

The uterus, or womb, is where a developing foetus grows during pregnancy. It is lined with tissue that provides nutrients and oxygen to the foetus and contracts during labour to help push the baby out.

What is the cervix and its role during childbirth?

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. During childbirth, the cervix dilates (opens) to allow the baby to pass through the birth canal.

What is the function of the vagina?

The vagina is a muscular, elastic tube that serves as the birth canal during childbirth and is where a man’s penis enters during sexual intercourse. It also connects the uterus to the outside of the body.
