What is a joint?

A joint is a part of the body that links two or more bones together, enabling movement.

What is a synovial joint and where can you find them?

A synovial joint is the most common type of joint, allowing a wide range of movement, found in locations such as the hip, shoulder, elbow and knee.

Give examples of different types of synovial joints.

Pivot joints (e.g. neck), hinge joints (e.g. elbow and knee), and ball and socket joints (e.g. shoulder and hip).

What is the role of cartilage in joints?

Cartilage covers the ends of bones, acting as a cushion to prevent them from rubbing against each other and absorbing shock.

What is the function of synovial fluid?

Synovial fluid reduces friction and allows smooth movement between bones in a joint.

How do ligaments contribute to joint stability?

Ligaments are strong, flexible bands of connective tissue that connect bones and help prevent dislocation, stabilising joints.
