Preventing Extinction

Habitat Regeneration

Breeding Programs

A breeding program is a planned effort to breed a specific species, typically over several generations. This is carried out to increase the population of the species or improve their genetic diversity.

There are different methods of breeding, including:

  • Natural methods, such as allowing animals to breed in the wild
  • Artificial methods, such as in vitro fertilisation

Breeding programs are often used to help protect endangered species and prevent their extinction. They can be very useful for maintaining reserve populations of endangered species in zoos and other conservation facilities.

In conservation facilities, these endangered species can be protected and cared for while efforts are made to improve their chances of survival in the wild.

Seed Banks

Seed banks are facilities that store seeds to preserve the genetic diversity of plants. They typically store the seeds of rare or endangered plants, as well as those of other species that are important to humans or the environment.

The seeds are carefully collected, cleaned, and stored in a way that ensures their long-term survival. Seed banks use the stored seeds to breed new plants, which can be used to:

  • restore or enhance natural habitats
  • increase the population size of a particular species
  • reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

Once the new plants have grown to a certain size, they may be released into the wild. This will help to support the survival and growth of their species.

The Importance of Recycling

Greenhouse gases are gases that are released into the atmosphere and trap heat, causing the Earth’s temperature to rise. This process, known as global warming, is linked to climate change, which can lead to habitat loss for many species.

We can reduce the impacts of climate change and protect animal habitats by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.
