Unbalanced Forces Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What happens to an object at rest or in motion when no unbalanced force acts on it?

An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and direction.

What are unbalanced forces?

Unbalanced forces occur when two forces acting on an object are not equal in size, causing the object to change speed or direction.

How do unbalanced forces affect a stationary object?

Unbalanced forces will cause a stationary object to start moving.

How do you determine the resultant force on an object?

Subtract the smaller force from the larger force.

For example, 100N – 60N = 40N acting towards the right.

What happens to a truck’s speed if the driver increases acceleration?

The truck’s speed will increase because the forward force is greater than the friction.

What does it mean when forces on a moving object are balanced?

The object moves at a constant speed, neither accelerating nor decelerating.
