Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a cell?

A cell is the smallest unit of a living thing and the basic building block of life.

What name is given to the parts inside a cell, like the nucleus and mitochondria?

They are called organelles.

Which five main parts are found in both animal and plant cells?

Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes are in both animal and plant cells.

What is the job of the nucleus in a cell?

It controls what the cell does and holds the genetic material (DNA).

What is the function of the cytoplasm?

It is a jelly-like substance where many chemical reactions happen.

What does the cell membrane do?

It controls what enters and leaves the cell.

What is the role of mitochondria in a cell?

They are where most aerobic respiration happens, which releases energy for the cell.

What is the function of ribosomes?

They are tiny structures where proteins are made.

Which three parts are found in plant cells but not in animal cells?

Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large permanent vacuole.

What does the cell wall do in a plant cell?

It is made of cellulose and supports and strengthens the cell.

What is the function of chloroplasts in plant cells?

They contain chlorophyll and are where photosynthesis takes place to make food for the plant.

What is the role of the permanent vacuole in a plant cell?

It is a space filled with cell sap that helps keep the cell firm.
